From the Classroom to the Community: The Student Branch Program
Fall is a special time of year at the credit union. The season is rich with reminders of our roots, from the day our charter application was signed in an elementary school cafeteria in late October to the early meetings held at Medford Senior High School. It’s a time to reflect on our beginnings and celebrate as our Student Branches reopen for a new school year.
One of Rogue’s proudest accomplishments is our Student Branch Program, the first of its kind in Oregon. This innovative initiative began as a senior project at South Medford High School in 1993 and has grown to six high schools, employing 24 Student Tellers. Each branch is operated by a team of students who manage daily operations, organize events, and help their peers build healthy financial habits. It’s impressive to see what they accomplish during the year.
Student Leadership and Growth
At its core, the program provides students with invaluable real-world experiences. The Student Branch Program fosters a special bond between the Student Tellers, their peers, the credit union, and the community. For many, the program is their first step into the financial world, where they learn the basics of budgeting, financial decision-making and responsible borrowing. Some get their first credit card or auto loan. They learn valuable leadership skills and gain a lifelong partner on their journey to financial well-being. They gain not just financial literacy but also confidence in their abilities to make informed decisions. Looking back on her experience, student teller Adeline Bell recalls:
“I’ve been able to see the cause and effect of financial decisions, both positive and negative. It’s given me a new perspective on debt and loans as a whole. I’ve learned how to manage debt responsibly, such as by making on-time payments and understanding how interest rates impact loans.”
Adeline credits the program with teaching her more than financial skills. The program taught her to craft a resume, lead by example and build professionalism. With these valuable skills, Adeline is preparing for a bright future, studying to become an actuary in college.
Building Futures, Honoring the Past
Rogue’s Student Branch Program is more than a unique learning opportunity. For nearly three decades, it has shaped students into responsible, empowered individuals who are ready to take on whatever comes next.
As we reflect on our history, we are proud of this program's role in fostering financial education, leadership, and community connection. By investing in students today, we are building a brighter tomorrow—for them, for Rogue, and for the community we serve.
